Citation Problem!!! all authors listed, even if more than 3 authors

edited 2 days ago
On Word, my Zotero currently lists all the authors in a citation for sources with multiple authors. Doesn't matter if there are 4 or 8. It lists them ALL! How can I configure Zotero to only display the first author followed by 'et al.' instead of listing all the authors?
  • This is controlled by the citation style. What style are you using?
  • Apa 7th
I tried to fix it myself with chat gpt but it didn‘t work. Went via the settings into this path of the specific citation style… it looked like a „programmers path“. There I could downloead this „path-information“ and open it with a writing program. Then had to look for . If it wouldn‘t have been like that, I should have correct it, save it and then import into Zotero again and like „make the rule run“ on my document. I should have done it for the path of and also . It was already correct but I still proceeded with the save and import into zotero for apa 7th rule. Didn‘t change!
    HELP!!!!

  • A bit hard to say, but the APA style will add additional authors before et al to disambiguate (so e.g., Smith, Meyer, Muller 2002; Smith, Meyer, Schmidt, 2003), so that's a possibility. Does this happen in a new document with just those ones cited?

If it does, could you paste both the citation and the bibliography entry here?
  • yes it happens in new documents too. what do you mean should I paste? This path thing that looks like a "coding-something"?
  • What you see in the paper -- both the citation and the bibliography entry
  • (Eltanamly, Leijten, Rooij & Overbeek, 2021) > direct cited at paragraph

  • (you should make sure to store titles in sentence case: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/sentence_casing).

This isn't Zotero's/CSLs APA style, which would add a comma before the &. Are you using a custom version? Can we get a screenshot of the document preferences?
  • hmm... i dont think im using a custom version. I did what I mentioned above with that "min 1 and max 3" thing and had to save it and then import it into zotero. But literally nothing changed...

How can I let the "zotero CSLs APA 7th Style" run over my document? Will this destroy any of my work?

(and where can I find these "document preferences" you are talking about? so i can take a print screen?
  • In Word, in the Zotero tab, see "Document Preferences".
    See https://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_usage

Once you set (or change) a citation style there all citations and the bibliography will be changed to that style, i.e. "run over your document".
