907551515 - file can't be deleted

Hi, per 907551515, I've deleted every file associated with the particular author, and emptied the trash, but Zotero desktop client still thinks that PDF exists. What do I do?
  • The file 'C:\Users\[…]\Zotero\storage\4IJSZBNV\[…].pdf' cannot be created.

Check that the file is not currently in use, that its permissions allow write access, and that it has a valid filename.

Restarting your computer or disabling security software may also help.
You're getting lots of file-related errors like this. Security software is most likely interfering.
  • Thanks dstillman!

Yup, checked that the file is not in use. Several times I tried various combinations of exiting the application, restarting the computer, uninstalling the application, and reinstalling the application.

Yup, checked that the application has permission to edit the directory. It's the same directory as every other file Zotero is syncing to my computer. I've deleted the file and it's folder from the directory a few times. But, it just repopulates the folder and the file after syncing. I've even deleted the file from the library and emptied the trash--both on the desktop client and on the web--and the files still seem to repopulate.

Yup, file names seem to be fine. No special characters.

Can't disable security software. But it's only a handful of files that are affected.

Any other ideas? Is there anything I can do to the app? Any cache I can clear or something? Do I need to eliminate my entire library and start over?
  • Hmmm...I think I just discovered that there were two trash bins. ._____.
  • I've even deleted the file from the library and emptied the trash--both on the desktop client and on the web--and the files still seem to repopulate.
Well that wouldn't be the case, certainly. If you delete the attachment item with that key, and certainly if you delete it in the web library too, it won't reappear — that's just not possible.

Paste "4IJSZBNV" into the search bar in All Fields & Tags mode in the library root to find the attachment in question, delete it, and empty the trash.

But there's some sort of systemic issue here, and third-party security software is the most likely cause. You can delete the problematic files, but I'd be surprised if this didn't continue happening with other files.

(You should absolutely not delete your library and start over.)
  • Oh, I guess you mean that you weren't actually emptying the right trash? OK, that would explain continuing to get the error. Still, likely a more general problem.
