red exclamation mark and " is not a valid link mode.
This is lowest priority because Zotero works fine. There is a red exclamation mark next to the sync button that says '' is not a valid link mode. I can't see which items this refers to. What would I need to do to fix this?

Make sure this happens in Troubleshooting Mode (Help → "Restart in Troubleshooting Mode…”), which temporarily disables all plugins.
(restarted in troubleshooting mode, waited until sync was finished, enabled Debug Output Logging, synced, collected ID)
oh I see. Authors too long. This reference was a mess, and I wanted to put these authors somewhere a normal search would find them so I can clean this up later. So I pasted them all into one Author field, which is obviously a bad idea. Next time I'll add them to the title, or add just the one author I want to find, and the rest elsewhere.
The error you reported above is for an item that's corrupted — likely because of something a plugin did. You can paste GSES8E2V into the search bar in All Fields & Tags mode to see the item in question. It's a Conference Paper item that…also has some properties of an attachment item. We'll have to look to see how that's even possible.
Do you recall what you did with that item? It appears to also have several dozen related items.
I am pretty sure I used the new Zutilo Copy and Zutilo Paste from windingwind/zotero-actions-tags to change the Item Type. I think first I made a correct conference volume that is a book, made many book sections from it, then dragged the scanned and split files into Zotero, made Parent Items for them, changed one item to Conference Paper, copied the Item Type with Zutilo Copy, pasted the Item Type with Zutilo Paste and thus changed the Item Type to Conference Paper, and merged them with the empty Conference Papers from the proceedings volume so the Date Added would be in about the same order as the papers (so I can find stuff by eye). Then I renamed the papers properly with author and title. Even if that's not the exact order of things done, I certainly did quite a few things with these pdfs.
In Zotero, there is no attachment with GSES8E2V. If I search for the GSES8E2V in the Finder (I'm careful not to change anything there) there is a pdf there, but I also have that paper already properly renamed and in a different folder in Zotero.
So I could just delete that item. Or I can try out some more stuff with it to figure out what's wrong with it, or send it if you'd like.
