Backup Zotero on iOS

Hallo Zotero Forum,
I am using Zotero on my iPad and iPhone. I don’t have a personal computer at home.
Thank you for the great app. I synchronize all data to the Zotero server.

My question is: what do you recommend for backup? I read the blog post about backup but didn’t find anything for iOS backup.
Do you have experience with backup on iOS or is this not possible?

Thank you, Daniel

You don't back up iOS data separately. You just back up your iOS device via iCloud or Finder.

  • Thanks. I do my iOS Data Backup as you said. But how does this affect my Zotero data? My Zotero data is synchronized to the Zotero storage. And I do not have an additional backup for it, at the moment.
This is why I was asking, what you recommend for a backup. I use Zotero only on my iPad and iPhone.
    Thank you, Daniel

If you want a proper backup, you'd have to sync to a computer and make a backup of your Zotero data directory there.

If you're only using iOS, backing up your iOS device is all there is to do. You just don't have the same advanced options in terms of, say, restoring from a backup and overwriting online data the way you do in the desktop app.
  • Thanks again. Understand your point. When I manually download resources on my iPad in Zotero, where are they saved? Can I have access to them?
Can I automatically download all resources on my iPad?

In my opinion, when all resources are downloaded on my iPad and I do a proper iCloud synch, I should have at least a better option for backup.

    Thank you.
  • The iOS app currently only downloads files on-demand, but you can download all attachments at a given time by long-tapping on All Items and choosing Download Attachments.

Again, though, you can't have a real backup from the iOS app, because you can't overwrite the online library from the iOS app. That's only possible on the desktop.
  • Thank you.

When I download all attachments to the iPad, where are they stored? Could I save the files to an external storage?

Sorry, but I can't keep repeating myself. The iOS app works like every other app. All data and files are stored internally to the app and would be backed up by the system when you back up your device.

For a proper backup, use the desktop app.
  • Understood. Thank you. Topic can be closed.
