Dealing with names with suffixes?

Hey there!
Do you have any suggestions of how to handle author name suffixes, like Jr or IV? I am using McGill Guide but I imagine this comes up in a few other styles too. The square brackets shown below aren't in the style, just used to distinguish examples:

1. The standard for the main (initial) footnote is [firstname lastname,], like [John Smith,].
2. In a subsequent (non-consecutive) reference, the short form is [lastname, supra...], like [Smith, supra...]
3. and in the bibliography, the name appears like [lastname, firstname,], like [Smith, John,].

When I am dealing with John Smith Jr, the guide calls for citing him as follows:
1. In main citation, [John Smith Jr]
2. In subsequent references, [Smith, supra...]
3. and in the bibliography, [Smith, John Jr].

The question I have is how should I put this name into Zotero? If I go with
Lastname: [Smith Jr], Firstname: [John], then my main initial footnote will be correct but my subsequent & bibliography will be wrong: 1. [John Smith Jr], 2. [Smith Jr, supra...], 3.[Smith Jr, John].

However, if I put it as Lastname: [Smith] and first name, [John Jr], then the opposite is true - main citation is wrong [John Jr Smith] while the other two are good.

Is there any way around this, or do I just have to pick one and manually edit it later?

Thanks!
  • Add it after the first name preceded by a comma so:
    Smith, John, Jr.
This does appear to put a comma before the Jr. in the bibliography (so Smith, John, Jr.) but the rest will come out correctly.
  • @adamsmith incredible! I initially doubted thinking it would come out as [John, Jr. Smith] but it looks correct in the main citation. Thanks for bringing this tip to my attention!
