The Linux installation instructions are off-putting

same problem 18 nov 2024, snap install on ubuntu.

The zotero install instructions (I find) are off-putting, for example a verbal description of the commands, but not the actual commands for ubuntu. Who wants to guess what commands they are alluding to? So there is a need for a simpler installation like snap. It is simple but then installs a bungle - a bungled version.
  • You don't have to "guess" anything — the page tells you what commands you need to run. But you can extract the tarball anywhere you want, so they're necessarily going to vary based on that.

The page does assume you know how to run scripts from the command line. If you don't, you shouldn't be installing Zotero that way.

As the page says, there's a zotero-deb package for Ubuntu maintained by a long-time community member, which we do support:
If you're not comfortable installing tarballs or having trouble following the above instructions, this is what we recommend using.
We just can't support other third-party packages that we don't have anything to do with and that apply sandboxing and other restrictions that break core Zotero functionality.
