Import of student's citations into my Zotero Library

A newbie here. I have found many of my students using Zotero and so I have migrated to this software from another reference management tool.

My question is: when collaborating with a student on an article, how can I import their citations into my library? We are both using macs and microsoft word. I would like a folder for each student.
  • Perhaps if this has been previously discussed or there is another source, someone can direct me to the appropriate link. Many thanks. MV
  • You could use Groups for that.

  • This was a discussion I had on the same matter a while ago:

    The choices are,
    (1) use a group library, so you don't have to import anything. But that's not absolutely perfect, see link above.
    (2) let them insert Zotero references - those are active and contain full metadata (you can toggle fields on in Word and see it) and can be re-cited within that specific document again.
    (3) Use Reference-Extractor to extract their references from their Word file and add to your library (https://rintze.zelle.me/ref-extractor/).
    (4) If the goal is simply to add items to your library not connected to a document you are collaborating on, they can send you a list of DOI or other identifiers, and you can add those to Zotero in large numbers using the list of identifiers.
    (5) They can export their collections to Zotero RDF, which you can import. Export-import cycles are frowned upon for good reasons - the imported references are unlinked to those used in their Word files.
    ...

So, no perfect solution, but many good ones. (Sadly, we still keep our libraries separate, and one person takes care of all references.)
