No Zotero Tab - WORD LTSC PRO 2024

edited November 13, 2024
Hello,
I did all the steps to try to have the tab Zotero in word. It doesn't work. Even the reinstallation steps or manual installation you've provided in other posts.

The zotero.dotm is at the right place, i've deleted it, reinstall from zotero client. I've also move the file manually from zotera integration to word designated folder.

I've no issue about trust center. I can add manually all the macros.

If open zotero.dotm the tab doesn't appear.

I don't know what else to do, i've install LibreOffice and it work on it.
  • It sounds like your IT department has disabled macros altogether. You'll need to speak to them.
  • I managed my own GPOs, everything is fine in Trusted Center.
  • Also i can execute the macro by hand, in the macro menu of word.
  • You’ll need to debug this on your end. This is obviously something specific to your setup.
  • I would need a debugging tool or at least verbose log/a procedure to that..
  • If you open Zotero.dotm and go into Word Options -> Customize Ribbon then filter commands from Macros do you see Zotero macros there? If so it's a matter of Zotero tab not appearing in your ribbon, which could be due to ribbon customizations. In that case resetting Normal.dotm might help.

    Yes

    I didn't touch it and i don't know where is Normal.dotm.
  • Find your Normal.dotm and move it away somewhere temporarily (like your desktop). Upon restarting Word a new one will be recreated. If it doesn't help, try creating a new Windows user account and see if the Zotero tab appears there.
  • Still not appearing even with a new user (i've tried moving normal.dotm too).

Are you sure that the plugin is compatible with my versions ? It didn't appear on add-ins list from the word widget.

Can someone let me know what are all the required settings/GPO ? As there is no log or process on troubleshooting...

Mendeley add-ins works without any issue.

It's definitively a compatibility problem between Zotero and Word professional 2024 LSTC version.

Hope it will be supported in a near future but i'll stay with mendeley for now because i've to work.

    Thanks.
  • The Mendeley add-in is a different kind of add-in. There's no general compatibility problem here. If you open the .dotm directly and you don't even see the ribbon tab that way, something in your setup is blocking it from running. Again, if this is an institutional computer, you'll need to work with your IT department to fix it.

It's not an institutional computer. And yes there is a compatibility problem. Nothing is blocking the ribbon as the macro can be executed.

If you think it's not Zotero related, without asking for any logs or providing any details for troubleshooting, this is not really a serious approach of the problem.

Like i said, it's working also on LibreOffice, those are kindly using the same GPOs as the ones for Word.

I mean, you're running an LTSC version of Word, so by definition it's some sort of enterprise edition. The fact that you're even mentioning "GPOs" means that this isn't a standard consumer installation. We've documented all the troubleshooting steps we're aware of for standard Word installations, but we have no idea in what unusual ways you've configured your system.

We distribute a standard .dotm with a ribbon tab and macros. Zotero has millions of users, many of whom use Zotero with Word, and people have mentioned running LTSC versions here. It obviously works in general. But we're not Microsoft and can't perform internal Office troubleshooting. If you don't have an IT department, you should ask Microsoft for help.

    LibreOffice is totally irrelevant here.

Sorry we're not able to able to help beyond that.

" Zotero has millions of users, many of whom use Zotero with Word, and people have mentioned running LTSC versions here. "

Curious about that, do you have at least concrete example ?

    Zotero ribbon : https://imgur.com/a/kGnZ1Yp

Mendeley cite appear there but not Zotero.

Where Zotero settings ribbon are putted ? In the .dotm ? Because it's seems that to add a ribbon, it's needed to be import from an .exportedUI file.
  • The Zotero tab UI is contained in the Zotero.dotm template. We are continuously testing the addon with the 365 version of Word which is a rolling release going through all major versions, including the 2408 build that Word LTSC was forked from. Unless Microsoft has deliberately removed the ability for templates to add UI to ribbon (I am sure we would have been told this by multiple users by now) in 2024, this seems like a configuration issue. We haven't had reports of any issues from 2024 LTSC users as it's just been released, but our users are using Zotero on Word from configurations from very old to very new and nobody is reporting something like this.

As Dan said above we cannot provide troubleshooting information regarding Group Policies as that's Microsoft's domain, or any other custom system configurations as there's an infinite number of those that users can perform. The best way to check if this is a configuration issue is to create a new pristine Administrative account on this machine and see if it works there.

Did you use Zotero with this machine/configuration before and did it work with any other version of Word?
  • No, i've never use Zotero or Word on this machine before. Doesn't work even with Administrator account.
