Word for Windows Zotero plug in unresponsive Since Microsoft 365 updated

edited 2 days ago
Report ID: 1167283567

To reproduce problem:

1. Start latest version of Zotero 7.
2. Start Word for Windows.
3. Create new document and save it.
4. Enter some text. Open Zotero tab on Word menu. No response to clicking on any of the Zotero menu items, including 'Document Preferences', 'Add/Edit Citation', 'Add/Edit Bibliography'.

Problem persists if Word is started before Zotero. Have tried manually reinstalling plugin (which necessitated getting permissions from our IT department to delete old versions of plugin and copy new version into relevant folders.)

Also unresponsive if a document containing Zotero citations and bibliography is opened and if computer is shut down and restarted.

This seems to have happened after an update of Microsoft 365 last week. Same issues on 2 other users in our lab group with identical set-ups for Zotero and MS 365.

Many thanks for attending to this!

Leon.
  • This generally indicates that either some security software is interfering with Word's ability to talk to Zotero or that Zotero and Word are running at different integrity levels or as different users. You can check the process integrity level with process explorer by enabling the relevant column. You should pass this information to your IT and they should look into it.
  • Thank you adomasven,

Our IT folk got back to us with this:

"There was a bug in a recent Windows update that was preventing Zotero from operating correctly. A fix was rolled out yesterday and the software should be working correctly now. You may need to restart your computer if you haven't already."

So Zotero now talks to MS Word again. We do get a very brief glimpse of a box notifying us of an XML parsing error. Attached image can be captured only by pressing "Insert Note", other plug in buttons the message flashes by too quickly. Would this be a Zotero plugin thing or a Word thing?

    Thanks again for your help.

That's an unrelated Zotero bug that we haven't yet been able to reproduce. You can ignore.
