Newspapers.com metadata

When accessing articles in Newspapers.com through my institutional subscription, Zotero connector doesn't recognize search results as newspaper articles, and instead records the metadata as a website; it also doesn't save the PDF of the newspaper article or page.

  • Thanks, fixed. Your Zotero Connector should auto-update within a few minutes, or you can update manually by clicking Update Translators in the Advanced pane of the Zotero Connector preferences.
  • @AbeJellinek Thanks, but just tried it again and unfortunately the problem still persists for me.

  • It doesn't look like the Newspapers.com translator is running at all. Open the Zotero Connector preferences, Advanced -> Reset Translators.
  • Sorry, that still didn't work. Debug ID D1055940105.

I'm running Zotero 7.0.8, mac OS 14.3.1 on Firefox 131.03, if that's useful. (Also tried it on Brave browser with same results)

Would it have anything to do with the fact that search results in Newspapers.com don't return article-specific results? So when saving there is no specific article headline, etc. to fill the metadata fields? Still, one would think it would read the paper name, date, and page correctly and the article title could be added manually
  • Ah, thanks, I missed that you were viewing a full page and not an individual article. I've added support for saving from that view. As long as there's a clipping for the article you're interested in, you should be able to add it; if there isn't, make one with the Clip tool. (Doesn't have to be saved publicly.)

I'd like to support saving without a clipping, but Newspapers.com doesn't really give us even a bare minimum amount of metadata to make that possible.

See notes above about updating translators. Let me know if this works for you!
  • okay, mystery solved! It does detect it as a newspaper article when I use the Clip tool - still doesn't fill in the headline, but I can easily copy that over from the text in the "Abstract" field.
Thanks for your patience in helping me sort that out!
