COinS for title-level journal entry

I am trying to make Zotero recognize COinS entries for journal titles -- i.e. the full run of JAMA, not a particular issue of JAMA or a particular article within JAMA. However, when I use a "rft_val_fmt" of "info:ofi/fmt:kev:mtx:journal" and set rft.genre to "journal," Zotero simply ignores the COinS entry. I see an icon in the address bar indicating that Zotero has found entries, but if I click on it, I just get an empty box.

Are title-level journal entries simply beyond the scope of Zotero, or is there a way I can make this work? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Here is a sample COinS entry generated by my application that demonstrates the problem I described above:

<span class="Z3988" title="ctx_ver=Z39.88-2004&ctx_enc=info%3Aofi%2Fenc%3AUTF-8&rfr_id=info%3Asid%2Fvufind.svn.sourceforge.net%3Agenerator&rft.title=JAMA+%3A+the+journal+of+the+American+Medical+Association.&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Ajournal&rft.genre=journal&rft.au=&rft.jtitle=JAMA+%3A+the+journal+of+the+American+Medical+Association.&rft.issn=0098-7484"></span>

thanks,

  • What type of Zotero item would you expect this to correspond to? It doesn't have a generic Journal type, although perhaps it should.
  • Right now, as a temporary workaround, I am building OpenURLs for journals using the "info:ofi/fmt:kev:mtx:dc" format, which populates the right values in the right fields but causes them to show up in Zotero as web pages. Obviously, showing up as a Journal would make a great deal more sense!

I realize that you could easily argue against the need for a Journal type in Zotero -- in most cases, an end user isn't going to want a bibliography entry for a journal without any more specific details.

However, a journal-level entry is a common scenario in library catalogs, and it would be nice if Zotero did something better with OpenURLs representing this level of data. The current behavior of indicating that bibliographic data is available but then failing to display or import it is unnecessarily confusing. It would be better if Zotero would either work with the data in some fashion or ignore it entirely.
