Insert a citation in one document and it appears in another

I've been having a regularly occurring problem where I'll be working in a document, and when I click "add/edit citation" in that document, the citation is added to a document that I am not working on that is minimised. I then have to go on a hunt to find out where the citation has been added and remove it. The only way to stop this is to not have any other word documents open, which is frustrating.

Anyone have any advice on how I can fix this?
