Zotero connector doesn't work

I'm trying to resolve a communication problem between zotero connector and the installed zotero program. The plugin jigsaw puzzle piece shows zotero connector but it is greyed-out and non-functional. Therefore, I can't retrieve journal articles to be placed in my library. Word documents show Zotero in the ribbon tools and it is functional, but a dialog box says Word cannot communicate with Zotero, stating "Please ensure Zotero is running and try again." What's the exact problem that you're experiencing? If you're getting an error message, we need that.
