Help! Can't download Zotero

Hello,

I updated Zotero today and was informed that I could switch from the 32-bit version to the 64-bit version. I downloaded the new version from the website, but encountered the following message: "Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Zotero. Do you want to reboot now?"

I have restarted my computer multiple times, but Zotero still won't open. I tried uninstalling all Zotero files and reinstalling the new version, but the same notification continues to appear.

So far, I’ve taken the following steps without success:

Checked for Zotero processes running in the background and ended them.
Used a third-party uninstaller to ensure all Zotero files and registry entries were removed.
Manually deleted any leftover Zotero files and data.
Checked for and installed any pending Windows updates.
Attempted to install Zotero in Safe Mode.
Despite all these efforts, the problem persists. Could you please assist me in resolving this issue?

Thank you.

This is an issue we're working on, but you didn't delete all Zotero program files if you're still seeing this.

Just right-click on the Zotero shortcut and click "Open file location". That will take you to C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero, C:\Program Files\Zotero, or a path with AppData\Local\Zotero in it. Delete that folder — containing zotero.exe — manually, and then reinstall Zotero. (We'd also want to know what folder it was and what was in it, whether your Windows account has administrator privileges, and if there's anything else unusual about your installation.)

Note that you absolutely don't need to and shouldn't delete your Zotero data directory. This has nothing to do with your Zotero data.
  • Thank you for the instructions. They worked. I had two instances of Zotero installed and had to delete both:

    - in 'Program Files'
    - in 'Program Files (x86)'

  • The Zotero 7.0.8 installer should fix the reboot loop.
