Zotero still renaming files even with setting turned off

Hello,

I have Zotero 7 and the Zotmoov plugin installed. I'm trying to keep the default names of the attached files without having Zotero rename them.

I unchecked "Automatically rename locally added files" in Settings, and I went into Config editor to turn "extensions.zotmoov.rename_title" to false. I also double-checked in Config editor that Zotero's autoRenameFiles is also false. However, when I tested it on a new pdf, it still renamed the file. I tried restarting my entire computer, still the same issue. Any advice is appreciated. Error ID is: 46063705

Firstly, we assume you are talking about actual file names - as stored on your computer - not attachment titles.
    https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/attachment_title_vs_filename

Secondly, since you mention Zotmoov we assume you are talking about linked attachment files, not locally stored files (under Zotero\storage). Now that the new Zotfile-like v7 plugins (Zotmoov or attanger) use Zotero for renaming linked attachment files (instead of Zotfile's own scheme), the setting for 'Rename Linked Files' in Zotero settings becomes relevant. Do you have that turned OFF ?
    https://www.zotero.org/support/file_renaming

If you already have that setting OFF, can you describe the exact steps where you see Zotero *not* honouring that for linked files (ie still changing the file name stored on your computer), with Zotmoov disabled ?

If that setting only fails to be honoured when Zotmoov is enabled, that would be a problem to report to the developer.

The Zotmoov hidden preference you changed is for something else (attachment title/filename decoupling).
  • Hello Tim,

Apologies for the late response. Yes, I meant actual file names as stored on my computer, not attachment titles.

I turned off both Zotmoov and "Rename Linked Files" and saved a new PDF to my computer.

After right-clicking on the file and asking to show file location, it shows in my Zotero storage that the actual file was still renamed.

    Thank you for your troubleshooting.

See the description below "File Renaming" in your screenshot.

You saved that item with the Connector, and the PDF was attached automatically. PDFs saved by the Connector often have nonsense filenames or no filenames at all, so Zotero always renames them. "Automatically rename locally added files" doesn't apply.
  • Thank you for that clarification.

In that case, if I wanted to keep the original filename of the PDF while using Zotero for citation and annotation purposes, I should:

    1. Turn off "Automatically attach associated PDFs and other files while saving items"
    2. Use the Connector to only save the citation of the PDF
    3. Download the PDF into the storage folder of my choice
    4. Link the PDF file to the citation in my Zotero library

    Is that correct?
  • It would be much easier to copy the filename from your browser and paste it into the attachment's Filename field in Zotero, while still allowing Zotero to do the saving.
