Zotero button missing in safari

I've seen this elsewhere, and have tried deleting and re-installing Zotero, but the button in safari still doesn't appear or flashes for a fraction of a second.
M1 iMac, Sequoia 15.0.1

  • If you go into Safari Options -> Extensions is the Zotero Connector enabled?
  • Yes, it is (on Sequoia it's Safari -> Settings -> Extensions)
  • Do you have other extensions installed into Safari? Have you tried disabling them?
  • Yes, (ad blockers) and I have tried disabling them - it makes no difference. It "flashes" on when I first enable it, then disappears almost immediately, but then flashes on very occasionally.
  • Could you follow these steps:
    1. Disable Zotero Connector in Safari
    2. Open Console.app
    3. Press "Start" to start logging
    4. Enable Zotero Connector in Safari
    5. Press "Stop" in Console
    6. Type "ZoteroSafariExtension" into the search field in Console and press Enter.
    7. Select all items and hit Cmd-C (or Edit -> Copy).
    8. Paste them into a text file and send it to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread.

  • Do you run any security software that could interfere with the Zotero Connector? Have you tried restarting your Mac?
  • Yes, Trellix antivirus (my university demands this), and yes, several times...
  • You should test with the antivirus disabled. You should talk to your IT if you cannot do this without their permission.

  • Can you create a new temporary user account on this Mac and see if the issue is present there?
  • same behaviour. but weirdly now on the main user the button is there, but the icon itself is wrong - looks like a page with a turned over corner, not a z
  • That's how the extension works — it shows you what was detected on the page.

  • that's a new one on me - last time it did work it was just a Z icon... but at least it seems to be working now!
  • If it works in a new account it means that some configuration option on your main account is preventing it from working. If you figure out what that is let us know and we will look into fixing it.
