Rename linked files not working

edited October 3, 2024
Hello, I'm trying to get over 9,000 PDFs renamed in Zotero 7. I suppose all I needed to do was checking the box "Rename linked files" for this to happen automatically based on my new naming template. However, when I ask Zotero to Show in Finder (I'm on a Mac), the files still appear with the old name. I tried restarting Zotero to see if this would trigger the renaming but it didn't. Am I missing a step to automatically rename existing files?

"Rename linked files" refers to *future* linked files you add (and any other time a file rename would be triggered).

"Rename file from parent metadata" should work, but has to be done file by file AFAIK.

Your best bet is for bulk renaming of existing linked files is probably Zotmoov or Attanger (Zotfile-like plugins for Zotero v7). They trigger Zotero renaming of files as part of their move/link/rename process (but if the files are already in the specified linked-file directory, they won't get moved). You can select multiple items and then right-click for the move/rename option. Usually best done in small chunks, like 50-100 at a time (although may work with larger numbers if you're away from the computer for a while).
  • OK, great. Thanks for the response.
  • There's no need to use a plugin for this. "Rename File from Parent Metadata" works on multiple attachments.

You can select multiple attachments at once by doing a search for "pdf" or similar in All Fields & Tags mode and then doing a Select All in the items list. Only the items that match the search will be selected. (You can modify the selection as necessary by Command-clicking items.)

(We're also working on a continuous-renaming option, and that will likely include a prompt to update the filenames of existing files when you change renaming settings.)
