zotero 64-bit installed but only 32-bit is launched

Hi

I just upgraded zotero to 7.0.5 from the Help menu (Check for updates...) and after the upgrade I got a warning / suggestion banner message saying that I should use the 64-bit version for better performance (with a link to the download site).

I went on and downloaded zotero 7.0.5 64-bit, installed, and in the last step of the installation I left selected the checkbox for "Launch Zotero". Intriguingly, the launched zotero was the 32-bit version.

So now I have the two versions co-existing, one in C:\Program Files\Zotero (64-bit) and the other in C:\Users\fernan\AppData\Local\Zotero (32-bit).

I still do not understand why installation of the 64-bit version ended up launching the 32-bit one. Probably I'd have to adjust the PATH? Is there such thing in Windows (pardon me I come from the UNIX/Linux world).

Should I remove the 32-bit installation? Would that remove my data?

Please advise. Thanks!
  • Just adding that the Launcher in the windows start menu points to the 32-bit version. It seems like the 64-bit installer did not overwrite or install its own launcher?

I just edited the 'Target' location in the Properties to target C:\Program Files\Zotero\zotero.exe and now the launcher runs the correct 64-bit version.

Should I also change the 'Start in' location? Would that affect my data? Where is my zotero library stored?

The 64-bit version should've uninstalled the 32-bit version, but it looks like you installed the 32-bit version without admin privileges, which caused it to be installed in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Zotero instead of C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero. We'll look into detecting that properly even in that location.

For now, I'd recommend just uninstalling both and reinstalling the 64-bit version. Your data won't be affected.
