iOS Beta (TestFlight) highlight bug when syncing with iPad
What triggered the bug: Highlighting in a PDF on my iPhone, then opening the same PDF on my iPad (making sure the files are synced).
This is how it shows up on my iPad:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/zotero.org/images/forums/u9485158/iax5ifotj8a50vrefrii.jpg
However, when manually editing the annotation, like so:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/zotero.org/images/forums/u9485158/04aznbkhllt1v8giniaj.jpg
The annotations on that page reappear:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/zotero.org/images/forums/u9485158/eosaq3g9w77pmnj5b9m0.jpg
Other pages are still blank. So the only way to make the highlights reappear now is by editing an annotation on every single page.
The document seems to be synced, since the annotations do show up in the sidebar. It's just the highlights itself that appear blank.
To make sure the devices were synced, I have refreshed, closed, and reloaded the app on both my iPhone and my iPad. I have the latest TestFlight version (1.0.41) on both devices.

Can you make it happen every time?
Can you please let us know, which iOS version you have in each device?
Furthermore, can you start a debug log when you update in the second device, open the item, navigate to a page where a highlight doesn't appear, and select it? You can post the debug log id here.
However, I managed to reproduce the issue. The Debug ID is D1806045950.
I'm using Beta version on both my devices: iPadOS 18.1 (22B5034e) and iOS 18.0 (22A3354).
Thanks for the quick reply!
in iPhone:
- open PDF
- add a highlight annotation to a page
- close PDF
- pull to refresh and make certain no errors appeared
in iPad:
- pull to refresh and make certain no errors appeared
- open PDF
- annotation is synced in the same page
Additionally, videos of your steps in each device, might help us.
The bug appears slightly different now, however. Note the yellow highlight (below Chapter 2). It disappears when I start to scroll. When I click on the highlight in the sidebar, it reappears again.
So far, it seems like a drawing issue. We updated the library we use to present PDFs to the latest version, so it might affect this case as well.
