linked attachments: settings don't affect actual storage

How can I make Zotero store attachments where I want?

In Zotero 6.x I used a folder on iCloud, and Zotfile renamed attachments and moved them to that folder. Now Zotero 7.x stores attachments locally in numbered folders, and I really don't want to end up with two different storage folders. And I really do need access to the attachments from multiple computers via iCloud.

Chosen in "settings > advanced":
~/Library/Mobile Documents/com~apple~CloudDocs/zotero_storage

Where attachments really end up:
/Zotero/storage/Z549T3MJ (e.g.)

It's a bit frustrating, but I hope there is a simple solution I'm missing.

Re "Chosen in "settings > advanced": ", which setting there do you mean ? If it's the Linked Attachment Base Directory, that has no effect on where (linked) files get stored. If it's the Data Directory Location, that should not be in a cloud location (and also has no effect on where linked files get stored).

Regarding Zotfile-like plugins that are compatible with Zotero v7, you can use zotmoov or attanger for saving/moving attachments as linked files to the folder you specify:

  • The data directory location is on my own computer. So it's the Linked Attachment Base Directory, which I assumed controls where linked files end up ...

Thanks for the links, I'll give it a try.
  • The Linked Attachment Base Directory only affects where Zotero *looks* for linked files (not where they get stored). And a LABD setting is only really necessary if their location is different on different computers. If you only use one computer, or the linked file folder is at the same path on all your computers, you don't need a LABD. But once you have set a LABD on one computer, you usually need it on all your computers.

  • Ah ... now that explains it. Thank you. I've tried without LABD-settings, in the (erroneous?) assumption that iCloud-folders have the same path on different Macs. It didn't work, though. But Zotmoov does what it says on the tin. I'm grateful!
