Word plug-in with limitations on an institutional computer

edited September 12, 2024
I am using an institutional computer that has some limitations. More specifically, templates are blocked from running or modifying the interface because of the Intune policy “Disable UI extending from documents and templates” which changes the noextensibilitycustomizationfromdocument registry key. This is something I cannot change now.
I do see all macros in the Macros menu, but I see no commands. I tried to run the macros in the standard way and it looks that they work, but I cannot create buttons or menus, or tabs in my Word.

So my question for the developers of the Word plugin is this: Given the fact that I do not understand the difference between a command in Word and a macro, what are the consequences of running and using Zotero macros rather than the standard Zotero menu, or tabs, or commands that usually work in Word?
Thanks!
  • I'm pretty sure if you're able to run the macros that'll get you what you need. "Run this macro" is a command.
  • Adam, Thanks! To clarify, the commands that appear on non-restrictive machines are more or less links and icons to macros. I can live without menus and probably will simply link macros without icons. I will probably use keyboard shortcuts for macros. Is this the only impact I should expect?
Thanks! I appreciate your work with Zotero. You do a fantastic job!

  • Windows security policies are highly configurable, so I definitely won't promise that this is the only impact you should expect, but if the macros trigger the add citation dialog, assigning them a keyboard shortcut will do exactly the same as clicking the add citation icon, yes.
  • Thanks, Adam; I'll create shortcuts and use this stripped-down version of the plugin. I manage to use the macros with the Zotero 6, not with Zotero 7, but that works with me. I'll try to work with my IT rep and find a better solution.
    Best regards!
