Zotero Plugins in LibreOffice Writer

So I don't want the Zotero plugins in LibreOffice Writer. However despite having always uninstalling them and removing, whenever I restart LibreOffice they are back. The issue seems to be that whenever I open the desktop version of Zotero it reinstalls the plugins in LibreOffice. Is there a way I can stop it from doing this? Short of uninstalling the Zotero desktop app.
  • You can just hide the plugin with View → Toolbars → Zotero.

It shouldn't be reinstalling the plugin on each restart, though. Unless there's an error during the installation or there's a problem saving settings in Zotero, it would just reinstall it whenever there's an update.
  • I also have the same issue. The plugin does not work on Linux and I don't want to use it anyway. I've removed the plugin from the LibreOffice (Extensions), but every time I open the Zotero desktop it brings the plugin back. Even if I leave the plugin and just uncheck the toolbar visibility, the toolbar reappears after I reopen the Writer. This is really annoying. I would really appreciate if this could be solved, preferably in such a way that Zotero is not bundled with the LibreOffice plugin. Thanks in advance.
  • The plugin does not work on Linux
I'm not sure what you mean by this. The plugin obviously works on Linux in general.

Unchecking the toolbar also hides it permanently in general, but if the plugin is getting reinstalled on every Zotero restart, LO might show it again.

How did you install Zotero? Are you seeing this with Zotero 7.0.4?

I'm sorry for not being clear; the plugin does not work for me personally (Ubuntu 24.04.1).

I've installed the software from: https://github.com/retorquere/zotero-deb
which is recommended under the Linux install instructions. My current version is 7.0.3. This way, at least, I can update the package using apt.

I think that the Zotero tries to install the Libre plugin after every restart. I was able to hide the toolbar in Writer (it worked only after several tries and restarts), but the plugin is still there in Extensions (and not working). :-)

Anyway, this state of things is fine by me, as long as I don't see the toolbar in Writer.

    Thanks for the help!

    Kind regards.
  • Just a quick update with new information. I've just updated the Zotero to version 7.0.4 and I was able to refuse the installation of the plugin (after opening the app). Now, there is no more plugin in LibreOffice. Yay! :-)

As a side note, I just recently switched from Mendeley and I am not going back. I really like this software so far; version 7 is a game changer. Great work!

    Thanks again.
  • OK, great. @hcro137, can you also test whether the repeated installations have stopped for you with 7.0.4 (now 7.0.5)?
