My bibliography keeps disappearing

Im almost done writing my thesis and haven't had any trouble with Zotero until recently: whenever I add a new citation, this citation appears underlined (with a dashed line) and my whole bibliography disappears. I then usually click "refresh" on the Zotero tab on word, and a few times the bibliography reappeared, but often it would direct me to the Zotero app and nothing would happen. This has happened multiple times and is very frustrating, so any insight will be very helpful. TIA

The bibliography wouldn't be "disappearing", though — when you insert a new citation, the existing bibliography gets replaced by a placeholder message explaining that automatic citation updates are disabled and you need to click Refresh to update it (which you don't need to do until you're actually ready to submit your thesis).

Beyond that, you're very likely just not waiting long enough for the bibliography to be regenerated. It would've asked you to turn on this mode specifically in situations where updating the bibliography was slow.

Thanks so much for these clarifications. I probably wasn't waiting long enough for Zotero to be able to update the bibliography as I thought it just wasn't responding. Ill be more patient now and only refresh it at the very end. Thanks again :)
