PDF reader is slow and stuck in high resolution monitor after update to Zotero7

edited September 27, 2024
My PDF reader is slow and stuck in high resolution monitor after update to Zotero7. I find this problem in my laptop of Windows10 and desktop of Windows11.

I think maybe I find the problem, the Zotfile. Although Zotfile is not adapt to Zotero 7 and I have disabled it, it also influence the performance of Zotero. It's weired.

After removing Zotfile, Zotero 7 resumed smoothing.
  • 1) Does it happen with all PDF files?
    2) Can you provide a Debug ID for it happening?
    3) Could you make a video demonstrating the issue?
  • My Debug ID is: D1602757567
In fact, my Zotero doesn't have any significant issues. It's just that when running it, actions like dragging or selecting a PDF are very slow and there is noticeable lag.
    Thank you!
  • Restart in Troubleshooting Mode (Help → "Restart in Troubleshooting Mode…”), which temporarily disables all plugins. If that fixes it, you'll need to identify the plugin that's causing it and then report the problem to the plugin's developer.

If it still happens, we'll need to see a video, either linked here or sent to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread. What you describe doesn't sound normal for Zotero 7, which should be faster than Zotero 6 in almost all ways.

(And please don't post to other threads about this issue. It just makes it harder for us to help you.)
  • Hi, I have tried to Restart in Troubleshooting Mode, but it seems that it did not work.

I have sent the video to the email. In fact, I did not use Zotero in any special way, just for reading and annotating PDFs.
Everything seems normal from the video, but it is very slow and lagging, which is painful.
  • Does it happen with all PDF files or only some? E.g., if you close all tabs except for a basic PDF with only text, does it still happen?

Does this happen after restarting your computer, before starting other programs? If you open Task Manager, are there other things using CPU?

    What resolution monitor is this?

Just to be sure, you should manually disable all plugins and start in normal (non-troubleshooting) mode. Troubleshooting Mode disables all plugins, but it also slows down the PDF reader a bit.
  • Hi!
Although not all PDFs have been verified, it is certain that this issue exists in most of my PDFs.

My CPU is not overly occupied.

And my PC have i7-13700F, 32GB RAM, and 4060 GPU.

My monitor resolution is 3840x2160. In fact, this issue also exists on another laptop with a resolution of 2560×1600.

After closing all plugins in nromal mode, I found that the speed of the annotation window popping up after selecting text seemed to be faster (possibly an issue with zotero-pdf-translate), but overall it still feels a bit laggy.

    Thanks!
  • By the way, I think it work well in a 1920x1080 monitor or scaling to a small window in my 4K monitor.
