Zotero 7 uninspected update - with decline?

edited August 11, 2024
I really liked to work with Zotero until today. This sounds much more intense, as I am thinking it. I'm simply confused. I don't know when and how I obviously initiated an upgrade. Actually, when I turned off the computer it was still the known version. And now, as I switched it on again, it started with a new appearance. But not only the appearance did change.

The bibtex Keyword isn't displayed anymore. Well, I hope to find the function, to display it again. But: The Biblatex export does not work anymore. It needed not a second until now. Now, the progress bar flips left and right since nearly 5 minutes.

What did happen?

[Split from Now available: Zotero 7]

Actually, I now saw, that automatic upgrade was activated by default. What a pity. Now I have Zotero 7 (on Debian Linux 11). In itself not a crime, but the Latex export does not work anymore. The progress bar loses itself in a never-ending flip from left to right - and the bibtex keyword is not displayed anymore. A bit of a decline for me. (Since my first discussion contribution in the forum is checked by the moderator who might also read this: It does not need to be accepted since now I chose this comment instead.)

[Split from Now available: Zotero 7]

Just for the moderator: I found the solution. The Bibtex Plugin had to be reset again for update and Zotero needed a restart. Now the export is working and the citation key is visible again - although below. I don't like that, but I can live with it. Now, I will appreciate the new features and improvements to discover. Thank you very good work!

As we noted in the announcement, we're not yet pushing Z7 by default to the in-app updater, but if you're using the third-party deb, the maintainer might have started pushing Z7 to everyone. (@emilianoeheyns, I assume that's the case? I guess there's not a way to do a similar manual-only update?)

For now BBT displays the key in a separate section, yes. We'll be offering a way for plugins such as BBT to create Info pane fields in an upcoming version.
  • the package zotero6 is also available; you can uninstall zotero (or leave it in place actually), install zotero6, and things will work as it was. zotero6 will not automatically upgrade to 7, and they can be installed side by side.

Maybe I should have left 6 as zotero and made the new version zotero7 for now. I can still do that.
  • Don't you generally have to choose to apply updates anyway? I don't think most Linux distros update automatically.

So I think moving zotero to 7 and adding zotero6 is fine.
