No table of contents in the pdf viewer

I added a pdf to Zotero by dragging in the file and in indexed like usual. Howerver no table of contents was created and only 3 of the chapter links in the books table of contents works. Is there any way to add the links or the toc manually? The books is rather long so I would love to have a toc to make it easier to jump around.
  • You're referring to the Document Outline tab in the left sidebar of the PDF reader?

Zotero doesn't currently create a table of contents there — it just shows bookmarks that already exist in the PDF. We're planning to support some form of table-of-contents extraction in a future version.

For intra-PDF links, that depends on the PDF, so we'd need to see an example, either in a link here or emailed to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread.

(Actually, Zotero 7, currently in beta, does have basic table-of-contents extraction. It still needs some work, but you can try that in the beta or once Zotero 7 is released.)
  • Related to this, it would be great to be able to manually ADD bookmarks to a PDF, as you can in Acrobat. If the author did not use styles for heading formats, so everything is essentially plain text, there's much less to help programs auto-extract. So being able to manually add them is helpful.
As a work-around in current Zotero, I sometimes add "page notes"/stickies to each of the sections I wanted to be able to hop back to, and then use the annotation list to hop around. But that's a bit klugey.
  • @lpurban: The ability to add bookmarks is planned.
  • Wonderful! Great to know that. Thank you @dstillman.
