pdf file attachments faded and missing from the storage folder

Hello,

I have a number of items whose pdf attachments apepar faded. Some are showing as attachments online and I can open them, others are not available online either. I get the same error:
...\Zotero\storage\FMMX3AUU\WMCHC_Healow-workflow-3-2021.pdf

It may have been moved or deleted outside of Zotero, or, if the file was added on another computer, it may not yet have been synced to zotero.org.

Is there a way to recover some of them. Any idea why this is happening. Is it because I have transitioned through different computers?

Also do you advise to keep the zotero storage folder in the C drive, or is it better to move it to a cloud?

The message means what it says. If the files aren't available online, they haven't been synced from the computer where they were added. That's the case for the file you mention above. You increased your storage space last year, but if you were already at your quota, additional files wouldn't have been getting uploaded from whatever computer you were using at the time (and Zotero would've been show a warning icon in the toolbar on every sync).

If the files are available online, they'll appear with faded icons in the app if you have Zotero set to download files "as needed" rather than "at sync time", but they'll be downloaded automatically when you try to open them.
