Same authors in 2 papers

I am citing 2 studies with the same set of authors and the same publication year using APA, and they are both showing up in in-text citations as (Author1, Author 2, et al., 2022) instead of (Author1 et al., 2022a) and (Author1 et al., 2022b), which makes it impossible to distinguish between them. Any suggestions for how to fix?
  • When the second (or later) authors differ, correct APA style adds additional names (like you show Author2 in your example). Are the second authors different for the 2 papers?

APA only adds letters after the year when the author groups are identical.
  • The author groups were 100% identical, down to spaces and periods. I triple checked. Luckily I noticed that one of the articles makes it possible to use a 2023 date instead of 2022, so that solved the problem. Otherwise, I am stumped.
  • The style definitely does this correctly in general, I just tested. Happy to troubleshoot details if you're still interested -- first thing would be to test in a new word processor document and the style editor (under tools) in Zotero.
