Impossible to use Zotero on my Mac.

Hello everyone! I’m having trouble because I can’t open the Zotero application on my Mac since my last update. Before, it worked without any issues. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling it several times, but without success. I still get the same error page saying that "Zotero quit unexpectedly." What should I do? Thanks a lot!

  • Start by updating to a current version of macOS. You're running an outdated version, even of Sonoma.

Beyond that, you can try deleting Zotero from Applications and reinstalling it from the download page, but this is a macOS bug, so you should update.
  • Just to share — the latest minor release of macOS Sonoma is 14.5, but I'm (still) on 14.1.2 and Zotero is working fine.

I do see in the crash report that the termination reason is ROSETTA which is the emulation for Intel only apps, that could be the problem reason. You might want to try (if you are reinstalling Zotero anyway) the beta of Zotero 7 which is now a Mac universal app with native Apple Silicon. I installed a few days ago and it is working fine — and is much faster! It's another possibility.

@opere-citato: It's not some general incompatibility — Zotero has always run fine on any macOS release. It's just Rosetta 2 was buggy in earlier versions. There's no reason to be running an outdated, insecure, buggier minor version of any macOS release.
