Laptop freezes when adding a new footnote

Hello
Whenever I want to add a new footnote in my Word, my laptop freezes.

In addition, my footnote always appears underlined - what is the reason for this?

@Linda333: If you're talking about a dashed underline, it's this:

It would've prompted you to disable automatic citation updates if this is a large document and an operation took a long time. Depending on the number of citations in the document and what OS you're running (which is why we need a Report ID, as explained in the linked thread), a temporary freeze might be normal.
