PDF generated from AGU treats citation as plain text

What I mean is, when I download a PDF of an AGU paper, for example, https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2018RG000627, I cannot click on a citation during the reading, so it automatically transfers me to the References. On the paper webpage, you click on the date, and it shows the cited paper on the side of the screen. In the PDF, the citation is just plain text, so you have to ctrl+F and then paste the cited author's surname - it takes time and kills the reading flow. Is there any fix to it?
  • The problem is from the publisher here: if you download the PDF file separately from Zotero, and open it in an external PDF reader, you will see the same. The publisher did not include any links to the references. The links you mention are only in the HTML version of the paper.

The more recent papers from that journal have the hyperlinks to the references included in the PDF file, and these links work properly in Zotero:
    https://doi.org/10.1029/2023RG000828

In Zotero 7 Beta, they have implemented some automatic references extraction (still in testing), which show the reference in a popup window when hovering over it in the text for some of the PDF files. See for example on the more recent paper I give above:

This does not work (yet?) on the PDF file you mention.

For such PDF files, which do not have hyperlinks to references, you can use the split view of the Zotero PDF Reader, or open same PDF file in a another separate Zotero PDF Reader window.
