Chrome conflict with RootsMagic

I don't know if this is related to the post about LastPass, but the correction made on that post did not apparently fix the problem I'm reporting: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/115357/zotero-connector-conflicts-with-lastpass-in-chrome/p1

A users group for the software RootsMagic--one of the most widely used tools in genealogy--began reporting about a week ago that they could not get to the context-sensitive help in that tool. They eventually isolated the problem to those who were both Chrome users and Zotero Connector users. Turning off Zotero Connector eliminated the problem in RootsMagic, but leaves them with the dilemma of having to turn it off any time they want context-sensitive help.

They are on various versions of Chrome with the same problem.
  • That appears to be a local program. Is there also a web app where this occurs?
  • It's desktop software, but the help information is browser-based. I installed the free version, went into a field and pressed F1. It stalled for a while, then brought up this error:

    https://s3.amazonaws.com/zotero.org/images/forums/u420465/x157t9yjc7z4fgrhgdgl.png
  • But that's just opening up a page in Chrome? Can you share a URL? Or is it behind a paywall?
  • But assuming it's just something under help.rootsmagic.com, we can just exclude that domain.

Google has started requiring Chrome extensions to use a new version of its extension framework, which requires us to use a new, non-ideal method for detecting and saving metadata, and unfortunately it has the potential to cause conflicts with sites. We're hoping that Google will provide another option here, but in the meantime we can prevent the Connector from running on sites where there's a problem.
  • We've reproduced this and submitted a new version of the Connector with a fix. It should be available within the next day. We've also added a dynamic blocklist so we can fix sites with conflicts like this more quickly.

Note that it won't be possible to save from this site to Zotero for the time being.

Thanks so much, Dan. I'll let them know. I don't know that they save from this site that much. It should only prevent them from saving help topics to Zotero, which likely doesn't happen that much. It is a shame that Google has created this situation, though. I do hope they'll resolve it soon.
  • This should now be fixed.
