Adding/changing attachment does not alter "Date Modified" of item

When adding an attachment to an item or replacing or deleting an attachment, the sort items by Modified Date does not bring this item to the top because only the attachment date is changed but not the item date.

I do not see why an item date should not be updated as well, but open to different perspectives.
