OpenOffice 3.2 can't communicate with Zotero, OSX Network Home Directory Directory

Okay, so I'm having an issue getting zotero to communicate with openoffice with a network home directory using AFP...if I log into the host machine with root access and use Zotero locally it works fine, but this is a shared machine on a network and I can't expect everyone to do this. When I click the insert citation button from OO I get an error "openoffice cannot communicate with zotero."

If I run:
bash -c "echo 'OpenOffice addCitation' > ~/.zoteroIntegrationPipe"

then the error goes away, but Zotero does nothing, ie it doesn't insert the citation I've selected in my library when I press the button in openoffice.

Here are the paths after running the above command

ls -la ~/.zoteroIntegrationPipe
