Zotero Connector no longer working on Google Scholar citations

Zotero connector used to work on Google Scholar citations. By clicking on cite and clicking the Endnote format, Zotero woud create the citation and then I could immediate cite it without having to download the file.

Now it's just bringing up a prompt to save an Endnote file, rather than immediately importing the citation. Possibly something changed on Google's end. I've tried restarting my browser (Brave) and Zotero and disabling/enabling the connector, but still no luck.

Would really appreciate it if this could be fixed, as it's a real benefit to my workflow. Thanks.
  • You're aware that you can import from google scholar via the "Save to Zotero" icon?
This still works on other Chromium browsers, so it's possible it's specific to Brave (which isn't officially supported). You can check in the Connector prefences under General /Automatic File Importing that the "Import BibTex..." option is still checked. If that's the case, this should in expectation work.

@sneeky33: We can't help with Brave, but if you can install the Zotero Connector for Edge instead of the Chrome one, that would probably restore this functionality.

Google made a major change to the Chrome extension framework that prevents automatic RIS/BibTeX/ENW interception from working. We've been in touch with them about this, and they're working on a new way of supporting this capability, but we don't know when that will be available.

But as @adamsmith says, there's also no reason to be using this on most sites — you should just use the Save to Zotero button. (And you can of course also just save the file to disk and open it via Zotero to import, but there's no need for that either.)
  • Hi, thanks for the replies and ideas.

I am aware of the "Save to Zotero" function, but sometimes I just want to quickly cite something by clicking on the citation without having to download the PDF (for example, if I have a file that wasn't automatically detected by Zotero, I've found this to be an easy way to get the citation info without having to enter it manually). I just found that there is a setting in Zotero to NOT automatically donwload the PDF, so I might try that to see if that works for my use case.

I know I can also download the files and open them, but that's an extra step, although I'm willing to try that if necessary.

Never thought to try the Edge connector. I'll check that one out as well.

If the change only affects Chromium browsers and I still find myself sticking to old habits, I may try Firefox to see if my old workflow works there.

Regardless, I hope a compromise can be worked out with Google to make things smoother.

    Thanks!
  • Update - works exactly as expected in Firefox, so I'll just use that on the rare instance I need this functionality.
