artwork citations

Does anyone know of a database that contains artwork data?
Like say I want to cite this work by Duchamp:
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q22350881

Is there anywhere that has lists of works like this, similar to worldcat or something?

In other words, does every non-text format have to follow a laborious manual entry workflow?

  • Like if Zotero could pull from sites like this the way it manages to do with Youtube, things would be great

    https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/371722
  • Museum pages just tend to be a lot more fragile than other pages. The Met used to work (and we can likely fix it). We also in general have import for the Art Institute of Chicago, the Australian National Gallery, the Louvre, and (perhaps most usefully?) Wikimedia Commons, which has a ton of artwork.

I haven't tested any of these and I don't think they're used a lot, so if they're not working just let us know.
  • Wiki Commons doesn't work that great, but it might depond on how the page is put together:

Heavily curated example ↓ with fully integrated Wiki Data file
    https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mona_Lisa,_by_Leonardo_da_Vinci,_from_C2RMF_retouched.jpg

Neglected example with missing info in the summary and no Wiki Data file ↓
    https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rotorelief_No._5.gif

I will check out the other institutions if what I'm looking at coincides (a lot of postmodern Japanese and postmodern art generally so quite probably not).

Wiki Data rather than Wikimedia Commons might be the better import since multiple images get uploaded to Commons and the data gets a bit messy. Wiki Data on the other hand aims to have unique referrers and cleaner data.

    Thank you for your reply!
  • Yeah, we've talked about importing from Wikidata via identifier (might also do web translator, but using the identifier is more elegant imo)
  • ♡ That would definitely be a leveller, so many formats could work through that and Zotero users would probably end up tweaking Wiki Data on occasions making it build generationally as a resource. Will keep on with my manual entry for now then.
