export/import - loosing notes

hi,
I'm a grateful user of zotero v2.0 - and just having some troubles importing exported entries with notes.
It started when I typed my notes in Crimson-Editor and copy&pasted it to zotero.
When I exported this entry (rdf) and imported it again (just for fun and testing), the note was gone. (I thought it might be an encoding issue - but I'm not an expert in this)
I tried to export/import again - this time in the .ris - format, which worked - but formating (paragraphs, etc.) were lost. So I added the linefeeds and paragraphs again. After this I exported this to rdf and imported it again - and the note was lost again.

I searched the forum, but didn't find a similar mistake - hope I didn't miss it.
If you want, I could send the last rdf-file.

Thanks for your help!
  • Why do you need import export?
Note that it's not the right way to export or move your library. (this is not to say it shouldn't work - just making sure you're not using it for something it's not intended for.

Zotero RDF has an option to export Notes - did you have that checked? Did you use Zotero RDF? If so that should work.
  • hi,
for me it's important to be able to backup my library on my computer and recover it on another (and that without losing too much information :)

And yes: I exported in a zotero rdf file - with the notes,
but when I tried to import it again, some of them (the longer ones) were lost.
  • Export is really meant for moving your Zotero data into some other application, and I don't think there is any export method that preserves all your data perfectly. If you just want to back up your data, or move it to another computer, then you can simply copy your data directory. See this page: http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data#how_do_i_back_up_my_zotero_library
  • thanks! you're right. I really forgot about the data directory...

still it would be nice if it worked with export/import - but it's not a problem anymore.
  • I can confirm this. Ticket created.
  • Hi! Has there been any progress on this? I recently encountered the same problem (FF 3.6.10, Zotero 2.0.9). The note information was in the RDF file - albeit slightly mangled (all the left angle brackets were replaced by html special characters, but the right ones were still ok) - but wouldn't come through as a note in the imported item.

I have multiple libraries and frequently use export / import to move items from one to the other (export / import seems to be the only way to do this - and I don't really want to have a single library at the moment), so this is kind of an issue.

You may be able to use a group library to move items as well. The issue should be fixed -- I'll see if I can replicate it and track down what's causing this.
  • Thanks ajlyon! Using a group library sounds like a good idea - I will give it a go.
