unable to change reference style

I am currently in APA and want to switch to NLM but when I ask it to switch (in Microsoft Word, under Zotero, Document preferences, set to National Library of Medicine) , nothing changes.

Suggestions?

Test in a new document to make sure this is working in general.
Assuming it is, are you sure you have active citations in the document? E.g., do you see ZOtero-related Word field codes when you show field codes https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/word_field_codes ?
