how to export RIS file from a web library/ what is the collections pane

Hello,
I was invited to join a web library with about 3750 references in it. I haven't used Zotero before, our institution uses EndNote. I would like to export the set of references in RIS format. I tried selecting all the references and using the export button, but it did not work. It worked ok for one record at a time. I looked at the instructions at https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/exporting where it says
To export an entire library, right-click on it in the Zotero collections pane and choose “Export Library…”, or select “Export Library…” from the “File” menu

What is the collections pane? Do I have that in a web library?
Thanks
Rachel
  • Are you exporting to EndNote? Are you exporting a Zotero library to another Zotero user?

If you want another Zotero user to have access to your Zotero records you should create a Zotero Group, place those records into the new group, and invite the other user to join the group. After syncing, the user will have all of your records in the group on their computer.

Are you using the Zotero application on your computer itself or on the Zotero website? If on your computer see the left-side column where you will find a tan folder icon labeled My Library. The blue folders below are collections that reside within your library. It would be best if you read the entire page I link-to below.

  • All instructions for Zotero you see refer to the desktop application unless they specifically say otherwise.
You can't currently export to any metadata formats from the web library. Install Zotero, sync and export.
  • In web library exporting is possible with an icon in the toolbar but is currently limited to a 100 references at a time. To export more items into a single .ris file, you will need to use Zotero desktop app.

Web library is a complementary tool to Zotero itself, you can read more about limitations of the web library here: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/web_vs_desktop
  • Thanks to all for your responses. I have downloaded Zotero to my desktop, and I tried to set up syncing. I entered my username and password, and nothing happens.
    Am I missing comething
  • You might need to press sync button in the top-right corner of the main Zotero window?

    See https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/changes_not_syncing for sync-related troubleshooting.
  • That worked, thanks!
