[Zotero 7 Beta] Ctrl+F in the PDF after switching tab

edited April 30, 2024
After switching to a PDF Reader tab, I would expect that pressing the shortcut Ctrl+F would open the search box inside the PDF Reader. But at the moment it does not do anything.
I need to click first inside the PDF so that the shortcut opens the search box.

This is working correctly just after opening the PDF tab for the first time, but not for switching between tabs already opened.
This was working in Zotero 6.

Zotero 7.0.0-beta.76+91054acfe (64-bit) in Troubleshooting Mode

  • I can reproduce that on Windows, but not on macOS. Possibly there are issues focusing reader after switching a tab.
  • And I guess none of the keyboard shortcuts are working at all, right? I.e. arrow keys.
  • Probably related:
    1) Open a PDF file in a Reader tab
    2) Click on the Magnifying Glass icon "Find in Document"
-> It opens the search box with the cursor placed inside the search box, so that I can directly type the text to search:

    3) Close the search box
    4) Click on the My Library tab
    5) Click on the PDF tab
    6) Click on the Magnifying Glass icon "Find in Document"
-> It opens the search box, but this time the cursor is not placed inside the search box. Typing text does not do anything. I need to click manually inside the search box to start typing the text to search:

    7) Press Escape
-> The cursor is placed into the search box.

Just after switching back to a PDF tab previously opened:
    - Left / Right arrow keys are switching between tabs

    - Up / Down arrow keys switch focus to the next place. For example, Down arrow:
  • Yes, all the issues are probably related to the same problem, and it only occurs on Windows (though I haven't tested it on Linux). We'll investigate.

I can reproduce both the original issue and the one involving the magnifying glass on Linux with version 7.0.0-beta.77+adaa61f2c (64-bit). The key is to switch tabs using the mouse. If I use Ctrl PgUp/PgDn, things behave as expected.
  • I also see a similar problem with the magnifying glass in the note editor, from My Library or from a Reader tab. The cursor does not get into the search box when opening it by a click on the icon after switching item or tab. It only gets into the search box after clicking inside the note.

This should be fixed now in beta 78.
  • Thank you. It is all fixed for the search in the PDF Reader.

Still a small problem for the search inside a note:
    1) Click on a note in the Items Tree
    2) Click on the Magnifying Glass icon in the toolbar of the note
-> The focus stays in the Items Tree instead of going to the search box.

If I click inside the note before clicking on the Magnifying Glass icon, it works correctly:
  • I still observe the problem in the last post above in the latest version of Zotero.

    Zotero 7.0.11-beta.9+0a6095322 (64-bit)
    Windows 10
  • We'll fix it. Thanks.
