Can't edit manually added item

When I click the plus sign in the green circle to add a new item and choose any item time, all that appears in the list of publications is a blank line. There is no dialogue where I can enter any data, also, right clicking the blank line gives me no option to edit the entry. What am I doing wrong? How do I get the dialogue to show up?

It sounds like you have the right-hand pane closed?

Go to View → Layout and make sure Item Pane is checked.

(But note that you very rarely want to be creating items manually.)
