Federal Register references

Has anyone had experience capturing Federal Register references. I'm wondering which Item Type is best to use. I've looked at Hearing, Bill, and Statute but none of them seems to capture the right information. But, to be honest, I've never had to cite this type of information before, so I'm not really sure what the right information to capture is. If one of those types will work, I'd be more than happy to use it. Thanks in advance.
  • From Bluebook rule 14.2(a):

The Federal Register (Fed. Reg.) publishes rules and regulations before they are entered into the C.F.R. Citations to rules or regulations in the Federal Register should give any commonly used name of the rule or regulation, the volume and page on which the rule or regulation (or any preceding discusion thereof) begins, and the date. When citing a part of a rule or regulation, give both the page on which the rule or regulation (or preceding discussion) begins and the page(s) on which the cited material appears. When the Federal Register indictes where the rule or regulation will appear in C.F.R., give that information parenthetically:
Importation of Fruits and Vegetables, 60 Fed. Reg. 50,379, 50,381 (Sept. 29, 1995) (to be codified at 7 C.F.R. pt. 300).
Setting that against the Z items types ... I see what you mean. Statute is the closest fit, but it lacks the volume variable. Journal article provides all the necessary slots, but backreferences to secondary material will come out wrong; you really should use a discrete type for primary sources.

We need to have volume woken up on the statute type.
  • Has there been any development to update the "statute" type so that it includes the "volume" variable?
  • not in regular Zotero, but see fbennett's project here:
    http://citationstylist.org/
  • The fields and item types available in MLZ (http://citationstylist.org) are listed here:

    http://fbennett.github.com/z2csl/diffMap.html

Something from the Federal Register should be cited with the "regulation" item type. If you see anything missing, let me know.
  • I toyed around with MLZ for a few minutes and couldn't figure out how to use the alternative fields. Has anyone found a workaround that would work for Federal Register notices?
  • First, which version of MLZ did you try? (You can check the version in MLZ via gear menu -> About, or in Firefox at Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions).

Second, could you post the text of a sample cite? The style will need to be adjusted to cover it, but once that's done is should just work.
  • Fbennet, can you help me.

I can't find "place" in regulation item type.
  • Can someone please advise how to cite a Federal Register item. Regulation is not listed. Also, what's the chance that the items can be listed alphabetically as it is getting to be quite a long list. Thank you.

If you are citing a lot of legal items, you should switch to Juris-M, a fork of Zotero with expanded legal and multilingual functionality: http://juris-m.github.io

(And item types are listed alphabetically. Not sure what exactly you mean there.)
  • Thank you for the suggestion. Does Juris-M have all the features Zotero has? I am a scientist and not a lawyer, but we have to use FR citations frequently.

My list of items is definitely not alphabetical and I would love for it to be.
  • Juris-M is apparently no longer a Firefox add-on, but a standalone system. I really just need Federal Register added as an item. Is that possible? And to alphabetize them?
  • Firefox has discontinued the extension system that allowed Zotero/MLZ to be a Firefox extension. Zotero 5 is also a standalone app only.

Zotero (and the CSL citation system it uses) doesn't currently have an item type for regulations. You could try to workaround that with another item (e.g., Report might work fine depending on your needs), but for full support of this and other legal types, you are better off switching to Juris-M.

I still don't understand what you mean by alphabetize. Can you please give more details about what you are talking about?
  • How do I send you a screen shot of what my list of items looks like?

  • Has there been any development to update the "statute" type so that it includes the "volume" variable?
  • Also still looking for a way to cite the Federal Register, critical habitat designations for salmon.
  • You can add a volume field to the "statute" type by including it in the Extra area.
For example, I'm citing https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2003/03/28/03-7413/federal-management-regulation-internet-gov-domain using APA 7

Federal Management Regulation; Internet GOV Domain, 68 Fed. Reg. 15089 (2003). https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2003/03/28/03-7413/federal-management-regulation-internet-gov-domain

    Here is the Zotero metadata:
