How do I take a non-Zotero word document and implement Zotero?

I have a Microsoft Word document that I created without Zotero (manually typed in the references and superscripted the citations). Is there any way to go backwards now that I have installed Zotero and have Zotero "import/export" the citations that are in it? Basically I want to add more citations but I don't want to manually renumber everything so I'm hoping Zotero could help. Thanks.
