how to make sure Zotero is running

I have installed Zotero, and I can save literature in my library, but when I click on the Zotero toolbar to do anything, a message pops up that Word is not connected to Zotero and to make sure Zotero is running. I don't know what to do, because any time I search for a solution. I get instructions on installing Zotero. What can I do?
