Changing citation style from APA to AMA

I have tried everything that I read online or watched on YouTube for changing the citation style. I assumed it works like RefWork meaning when you choose to change the style, it will change the (in-text) citation as well as bibliography. is that correct?

My biggest issue is when I first tried, it wouldn't even open the document preferences window for me, and I thought that might have been a server problem but when it finally did open, it still won't change the document citation and I tried refreshing the word document as well as closing and re-opening it but seems like nothing works!

Yes, this generally is why we use a reference manager like Zotero. So, this should just work.

However, it looks like something is going on with your document.
First step, try in a fresh document. Add a citation, set APA style. Add the bibliography. Switch style to AMA.

Next thing is to check if the citations in your original document are still live. See https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/existing_citations_not_detected for how to check and also common issues why a document could be flattened.
