unable to add additional in-text citations

a second entry to a citation in a word document simply replaces the first. The Add/edit button does not produce the red quick dialogue box for more than half a second- before I could add multiple references in that quick dialogue box. I have redone the word connector in Zotero. What can I do to make multiple references at a single point in a document?
