Style request: Limnology and Oceanography

I'm preparing a manuscript for submission to the journal "Limnology and Oceanography" from ASLO. If someone could make a style for it, that would be great. The correct style can be found here http://www.aslo.org/lo/instructions/authors.html#References

Thanks
  • I also require the Limnology and Oceanography style

So to reopen this request (following the guidelines):

    1. a similar style American Meteorological Society
    http://www.zotero.org/styles/ametsoc/dev

    2. Differences AMS and L&O
In text citation; L&O, ordered by date.
Bibliography; L&O, fullstop after authors and year, journal not in italic and abbreviated when available, no punctuation after journal name, colon (:) after journal volume, article identifier and DOI should be included if available.

    3. A link to style definition:
    http://www.aslo.org/lo/instructions/authors.html#References
A link to an open access example
    http://aslo.org/lo/toc/vol_55/issue_4/1537.pdf
note: capitals for authors in final print and "removal of repreated authors" is done by copy-editor (not needed for citation style)

I hope i have provided enough info to start with and would be prepared to learn to carry this out myself (with some guidance).

    best regards Ed.
  • not forgotten, but at least I might take a while before I get to this - but it's bookmarked.

if you want to try yourself start here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/csl_simple_edits
and use this as a reference manual
    http://www.zotero.org/support/dev/csl_syntax_summary
(don't actually try to read through the entire documentation - trial and error in the test panel actually gets you quite far as you can immediately observe results of your actions.)
  • OK - I've added the style, it should show up soon.
There might still be issues - your list of differences was very incomplete and didn't cover books and book chapters at all - I did what I saw, but might not be perfect. Let me know.
Also, the Journal puts Authors in Small Caps - the style instructions don't - Zotero can do small caps - what is preferable?
  • Thanks adam. Sorry for the very slow reply, notices for the forum were going to an old e-mail account. Had a quick look today and it looks fine for articles. I will have a go adjusting the style for books and book chapters (within the next month), and post questions if i get stuck.

Small caps and "removal of repreated authors" is done by the copy-editor of the journal, so as is now (no small caps) is preferable. cheers Ed.
  • I found a small error in the L&O style: in the bibliography, articles with both page numbers AND a DOI have a space following the page number, before the comma separating the page and the DOI. That is,

    Wrong way
    Canfield, D. E. 1989. Reactive iron in marine sediments. Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta 53: 619-632 , doi:10.1016/0016-7037(89)90005-7

    Right way
Canfield, D. E. 1989. Reactive iron in marine sediments. Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta 53: 619-632, doi:10.1016/0016-7037(89)90005-7

To fix it, I had to change this line (fourth from the end) in the L&O .csl file:
    before: <text prefix=" " macro="access"/>
    after: <text prefix="" macro="access"/>

I've taken the care of the problem for myself, locally, but it should be fixed on the zotero.org website, too. I've never done this before and probably won't have time to figure out how until the dissertation's done in a few months... in the meantime, I hope this might help others!
  • thanks - I'll have a look to make sure your fix doesn't break anything else, if all looks good I'll fix it globally asap.
  • sorry it took a while - it's up now.
  • I have extended the limnology and oceanography style to include technical report names and to deal with conference papers more simply.

I'm not sure this is an improvement, but it is working for me for now.
  • cool:

  • I am using the L&O style to prepare a manuscript, but for some reason the DOIs aren't being added in the bibliography. Is there something I can do to fix this?
    Thanks!
  • I've updated the style - it will now include DOIs when there is no page number, but don't print them otherwise. The instructions say "at least one" of either pages or DOI is required - which this will do. If you look at published articles, they typically don't contain DOIs.
