[Zotero 7 Beta] Interpreting PDF Orientation Wrong

edited March 16, 2024
I think this started somewhere between build 63 and 68. When I see the preview, AND when I open the PDF in Zotero, all pages are shown as tilted to the right. When I "show file" and open the _exact same_ PDF in Apple Preview, it's perfectly right-side up.

As an iOS programmer, I know there's a metadata header on the images they work with which specifies orientation; any chance PDFs have the same thing and ... something is going on?

The full-size view matches the orientation of their respective thumbnails. (tilted for Zotero, upright for Preview)
  • Can you send a file you're seeing this for to support@zotero.org with a link to this thread?
  • Sure. It's literally every file in my database. Here's one more screenshot (of the PDF I will email you) showing that it is now sideways, but it was upright previously as you can see the image-based annotations right below it.

  • Does this happen in Troubleshooting Mode (Help → "Restart in Troubleshooting Mode…”)?

I can't reproduce this in beta 68, and we haven't received any other reports of this.
  • This issue is likely due to the deprecated rotation setting, which rotates all pages when the 'r' key is pressed on the keyboard. Despite being deprecated, a bug allows this feature to remain active in some keyboard layouts. We plan to completely ignore and disable this setting.

However, it's unclear why this occurs with "literally every file" in your library.
