Add "old" annotations into "fresh" pdf

I have a question that I haven't been able to figure out. I annotated a pdf, then I extracted the annotations. Unfortunately, later I accidentally deleted the pdf file from zotero. So I downloaded a new one. Now, my zotero entry has the extracted annotations and the linked pdf file. However, when I open the pdf in the zotero pdf reader, I cannot see the annotations. Is there a way to import the annotations?
