References in Word document disappeared

Today a student came to me with tears in her eyes. She has been working on her bachelor thesis in Word on MacOS with Zotero for two months. All the source references that she had placed in her Word document using the Zotero add-in up to and including yesterday have disappeared since today. Only the references she inserted today are still there.

Does anyone know about this phenomenon? Does anyone know what could have caused all the documents to disappear? The Zotero add-in was active. She has not done any Word updates, system updates, Zotero updates or any other updates.
